Just because particular tuning parts are are common on X14YFL it doesn't mean it is good, we shall concentrate on the top tuning parts that will give your X14YFL the best power gain for you money.

Without us subscribing to the misaprehension of 'if it's shiny and makes more noise it must be good' you seem to get in many tuning magazines and on car forums'.

Improving air intake on the X14YFL

You need air matched to fuel for an engine to work. If there is little supply of fuel then it will run lean, if there is a lack of air it runs rich losing power . We'll pick up on fuelling later in this article but for now we shall look at air supply.

So the goal to any engine modification job to pull fuel and air into your X14YFL but this has a knock on effect with the air flow sensor.

It is common that there is a limit in the air flow sensor AFM/MAP on the X14YFL when a lot more air is being drawn into the engine.

We see 4 bar air sensors coping with quite large power gains, whereas the OEM air sensor sapped bhp and torque at a much lower level.

Engine intake manifolds carry the on the suck phase from the air cleaner and allow it to be drawn into the engine cylinders.

Shape and flow rate of the Plenum can make a substantial improvement to fuel delivery on the X14YFL.

Most air intake manifolds are improved through motorsport parts, although some makers provide well optimised air intake manifolds.

Larger X14YFL valves, getting port work and head flowing will also boost torque, and importantly will give you a greater torque increase on other upgrades.

X14YFL performance cam tips.

Some X14YFL engines respond better to less aggressive cam durations so view each engine as unique.

The map and fuelling also have an effect on the bhp gains you'll make.

A longer valve duration can alter the bhp band and on most engines the exhaust and intake durations do not need to match, although most cams and tuners use matched pairs there are some advantages to extending the intake or exhaust durations.

The cam profile plays a big part in the engines power output so cam upgrades make quite a large difference. The intake and exhaust durations will alter depending on the chosen cam profile, so large bhp gains are on offer for cam upgrades.

NB: Fast road camshafts usually boost the bhp across the rev band, you could drop a little low end power but the high end rpm power will be lifted.

Motorsport camshafts, boost the high end rpm power band but as a result the car will not idle smoothly and low end power nearly always suffers.

In a car used daily you need to match your power band to your typical driving style.

I'd be amazed if you have found a X14YFL Competition camshaft is a pleasure to live with when driving in heavy traffic.

Stage 1, 2 and 3 mods for the X14YFL

Before we break the best tuning upgrades down into stages of tune, let's list the most effective tuning upgrades for you.

  1. Suspension Upgrades - always improve your cars handling
  2. Brake Upgrades - Even before adding power improve those brakes
  3. Intake - make sure the intake is not restricted, use filters and intake upgrades to improve this
  4. Exhaust - as with 3 ensure there is not restriction in the exhaust, cats are the usual bottleneck
  5. Tunes - remapping, piggyback ECU's and aftermarket ECU's can all make decent gains
  6. Fuelling - when you've increased power you'll need to match this with more fuel
  7. Turbo upgrades - Improving the intake with a large turbo and better flowing intercooler will be the biggest power gain you'll see (but one of the most complex).

Stage 1 X14YFL parts:

Panel air filters, Drilled & smoothed airbox, Remaps/piggy back ECU, Intake headers, Fast road camshaft, Sports exhaust manifold.

Stage 2 X14YFL parts:

fuel pump upgrades, Fast road cam, high flow fuel injectors, Sports catalyst & performance exhaust, induction kit, Ported and polished head.

Stage 3 X14YFL parts:

Twin charging conversions, Adding or Upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Engine balancing & blueprinting, Internal engine upgrades (head flowing porting/bigger valves), Crank and Piston upgrades to alter compression, Competition cam.

The X14YFL power plant respond well to upgrades and we're happy to report there is a lot of modifications and performance parts about.

Remaps should help to unlock the full potential of all the tuning parts you've done to your X14YFL.

You will typically expect to see gains of approximately 20-30% more power on turbocharged vehicles and you can expect to see around 15% on NASP engines, but your results usually depend much on the tuning parts you've fitted and the condition of your engine.

Turbo modifications on the X14YFL

To get a turbo working on a NASP engine there is a lot involved, from lowering compression ratio to improved fuel supply and mapping, so we have found a great guide to helpavoid the common pitfalls or end up with an unfinished project because you were not told what you were getting into by doing this on the X14YFL.

The more air you can get into an engine, the more fuel it can burn and uprating the induction with a turbocharger upgrade makes massive power gains.

When a car has forced induction parts are going to net you a larger power gain and turbocharged engines are built using strengthened components.

There are common areas of failure for every engine, with some being very over engineered and some just sufficiently able to handle stock power

Discover these restrictions and fit higher quality crank and pistons to cope with the power.

We've seen car owners spending a a stack of money on turbo upgrades on the X14YFL only to have the engine block catastrophically fail when it's been completed.

Big capacity turbo chargers tend to suffer no power at low rpm, and low capacity turbo chargers spool up much more quickly but do not have the peak end bhp gains.

In recent times the market of turbo chargers is always increasing and we commonly find variable vane turbo chargers, allowing the vane profile is altered according to speed to lower lag and increase top end bhp and torque.

Twin scroll turbo chargers divert the exhaust flow into 2 channels and push these at differently profiled vanes in the turbo charger. They also help the scavenging effect of the engine.

Beefing up the air intake by adding a supercharger or additional turbo will help you achieve very large power gains, although more complex to configure. We have this article on twincharging if you want to read more.

Tips about fuel supply on the X14YFL

Don't dismiss the need uprate the fuel system when you are increasing the performance - it makes the car more thirsty. Care modifiers usually say to over specify your injectors flow rate.

The rule of thumb is to add 20% when specifying an injector, which takes into account injector deterioration and allows some spare capacity should the engine need more fuel.

Don't forget that different fuel grades will usually require different settings, a high octane fuel will burn more efficiently than lower octane fuel for example. A car will trim fuel supply to keep within the ideal air fuel mix but at the extreme ends you may need to adjust your injector capacity, or the mapping or you'll get flat spots and potential lean or rich fuel issues..

Recommended X14YFL performance exhaust upgrades

You should look to increase your exhaust system with an upgraded one is if the existing exhaust is actually causing a flow problem.

On most factory exhausts you'll see the flow rate is ok even on modest power gains, but on a serious tuning project with a big boost in power you will certainly need to get a better flowing exhaust.

Sports exhausts balance the flow of air through the engine.

But if the exhaust pipe is too large, ie: over two and a half inches diameter, you will lose much of the flow rate and end up losing power and torque.

The usual suspects causing problems in your exhaust flow rate are traced to the filters installed, so adding a higher flowing sports alternative will help avoid this restriction.

Catalyst removal (NB:catalysts reduce harmful engine emissions) is illegal in most countries and regions.

Faults issues and things to look out for on the X14YFL

Like most engines an X14YFL, should have few issues if it gets properly serviced and looked after.

We cannot stress enough the need for oil changes with the correct grade of oil on the X14YFL, failure to do this will exacerbate engine wear, on a tuned X14YFL this is more important than ever and close attention should be paid to your maintenance schedule.
