So let us look into Suzuki K series K14 upgrades and outline the best modifications on this great engine and point out some frequent tuning mistakes along the way.

The Suzuki K series K14 make a good tuning project and with the best sports enhancements like remapping, turbo kits and camshafts you will really increase your driving experience.

Our aim here is to examine K series K14 tuning and summarise the greatest modifications for your car.

Just because particular upgrades are appear in lots of K series K14 projects it doesn't mean its worth having, we will concentrate on the optimum upgrades that will give your K series K14 the best power gain for you spend.

Without us subscribing to the misaprehension of 'if it's shiny and makes more noise it must be good' you seem to get in many tuning magazines and on car forums'.

Improving air intake on the K series K14

You need air and fuel for an engine to work. If there is too little fuel then it will run lean, if there is little flow of air it runs rich losing power . We'll pick up on fuelling later in this article but for now we shall look at air supply.

So the whole point to any performance tuning project to push air and fuel into each cylinder but this has a knock on effect with the air flow sensor.

It is common that there is a limit in the air flow sensor AFM/MAF on the K series K14 when a lot more air is being fed into the engine.

When tuning you may well find you need to get an air sensor or flow meter capable of upto 4 bars to cope with quite large power gains, whereas the OEM air sensor sapped performance at a much lower level.

The intake plenum take the air from the filter and allow it to be sucked into the engine cylinders with fuel for the squish phase.

The size of bore and shape and flow rate of the Air Intake manifolds can make a noticeable effect on to fuel atomisation and engine efficiency on the K series K14.

On popular production engines intake are in dire need of aftermarket parts, although some OEM provide well optimised intake.

Increasing the K series K14 valve size, getting port matching and head flowing will also boost performance, and as an added benefit will allow you to get an improved performance increase on other tuning mods.

K series K14 performance cam tips.

Different K series K14 engines respond better to different cam durations so set your engine up on a rolling road.

The ECU mapping and fuel pump and injectors also will say much on the power gains you'll hit.

Altering valve durations can alter the power band and on most engines the exhaust and intake durations do not need to match, although most cams and tuners use matched pairs there are some advantages to extending the intake or exhaust durations.

Altering your K series K14 cam will make a dramatic difference to the engine torque. Choosing a higher performance cam profile raises the torque accordingly.

NB: Fast road cams normally boost the torque over the rev range, you might lose a little bottom end bhp but top end will be higher.

Competition cams, boost the top end band but as a result the car will not idle smoothly and low end power nearly always suffers.

For a typical daily driver you must carefully try to match your torque band to your driving style.

You'll never have found a K series K14 Motorsport cam is a pleasure to live with when on the daily commute.

Stage 1, 2 and 3 mods for the K series K14

Before we break the best tuning upgrades down into stages of tune, let's list the most effective tuning upgrades for you.

  1. Suspension Upgrades - always improve your cars handling
  2. Brake Upgrades - Even before adding power improve those brakes
  3. Intake - make sure the intake is not restricted, use filters and intake upgrades to improve this
  4. Exhaust - as with 3 ensure there is not restriction in the exhaust, cats are the usual bottleneck
  5. Tunes - remapping, piggyback ECU's and aftermarket ECU's can all make decent gains
  6. Fuelling - when you've increased power you'll need to match this with more fuel
  7. Turbo upgrades - Improving the intake with a large turbo and better flowing intercooler will be the biggest power gain you'll see (but one of the most complex).

Stage 1 K series K14 parts:

Fast road camshaft, Drilled & smoothed airbox, Remaps/piggy back ECU, Panel air filters, Intake headers, Sports exhaust manifold.

Stage 2 K series K14 parts:

induction kit, high flow fuel injectors, Fast road cam, fuel pump upgrades, Ported and polished head, Sports catalyst & performance exhaust.

Stage 3 K series K14 parts:

Competition cam, Engine balancing & blueprinting, Internal engine upgrades (head flowing porting/bigger valves), Twin charging conversions, Crank and Piston upgrades to alter compression, Adding or Upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger).

The K series K14 units respond well to mods and we're finding that there are quite a few choices of modifications and performance parts out there.

A remap allows a tuner to release the full potential of all the tuning parts you've done to your K series K14.

You will typically expect to see gains of approximately 20-30% more power on turbocharged vehicles and you can expect to see around 15% on NASP engines, but the end result usually differs on the tuning parts you've applied and the condition of your engine.

Turbo modifications on the K series K14

To get a turbo working on a NASP engine there is a lot involved, from lowering compression ratio to improved fuel supply and mapping, so we have found a great guide to helpavoid the common pitfalls or end up with an unfinished project because you were not told what you were getting into by doing this on the K series K14.

The more air you can get into an engine, the more fuel it can burn and uprating the induction with a turbocharger upgrade makes massive power gains.

When the engine is fitted with a turbo upgrades are simpler to install and most turbo charged engines will have strengthened components.

However engines will need better parts at higher power limits

It is important to find these limits and upgrade to higher quality crank and pistons to handle the power.

It's not unheard of people spending a a stack of money on turbocharger upgrades on the K series K14 only to see the K series K14 throw a rod soon after it's been finished.

Larger upgraded turbos commonly experience low end lag, and little turbos spool up more quickly but do not have the top end power band gains.

Thankfully the market of turbo units is always moving on and we are seeing variable vane turbo units, where the vane angle is altered according to speed to lower lag and increase top end bhp.

Twin scroll turbo units divert the exhaust flow into a couple of channels and direct these at differently profiled vanes in the turbo. They also improve the scavenging effect of the engine.

Beefing up the air intake by adding a supercharger or additional turbo will help you achieve very large torque gains, although harder to get working. We have this article covering twinchargers if you want to read more.

Tips about fuel supply on the K series K14

When you raise the bhp you will need to look at to the fuelling.

More bhp needs more fuel. It makes sense to over specify your flow rate on the injectors.

The accepted safe increase is to add 20% when fitting an injector, this takes into account injector deterioration and gives some spare capacity should the engine need more fuel.

Don't forget that different fuel grades will usually require different settings, a high octane fuel will burn more efficiently than lower octane fuel for example. A car will trim fuel supply to keep within the ideal air fuel mix but at the extreme ends you may need to adjust your injector capacity, or the mapping or you'll get flat spots and potential lean or rich fuel issues..

Recommended K series K14 performance exhaust upgrades

We'd only recommend you look to upgrade your exhaust system with an upgraded one is if your current exhaust is actually creating a restriction.

On most factory exhausts you'll find the flow rate is good even on modest power gains, but on a serious tuning project with a big boost in power you will certainly need to get a better flowing exhaust.

Sports exhausts can usually air flow out of the engine but avoid an exhaust that is too large or you may end up will reduce the flow rate. Stick to one and a half to two and half inches as a rule of thumb.

Typically exhaust restrictions can be located the catalyst installed, so adding a better flowing sports alternative will help avoid this restriction.

Catalyst removal (NB:catalysts reduce harmful engine emissions) is illegal in most countries and regions.

Faults issues and things to look out for on the K series K14

Like most engines an K series K14, should have few issues if it gets properly serviced and looked after.

We cannot stress enough the need for oil changes with the correct grade of oil on the K series K14, failure to do this will exacerbate engine wear, on a tuned K series K14 this is more important than ever and close attention should be paid to your maintenance schedule.
