A6 tuning modifications

Tuning guide "Audi A6 Tuning"

The A6 replaced the Audi 100 and takes on other large executive saloon cars from Mercedes and BMW. Despite it's size and dimensions the A6 is very easy to drive, with the Quattro drive system fitted even more so.

The first time you get into an A6 you feel like you are in something special and well build. The modern styling details in the dashboard and on various trim items reinforce the quality feel.

As the A6 is finding it's way into the used market there is a growing demand for tuning parts as owners look to beef up the performance of the A6.

So onto the A6 tuning tips:-
The smallest capacity engine offered on the A6 is the 1.8 NASP and the stunning 1.8T which is a great unit and very tunable. The NASP 1.8 is best avoided as it is underpowered for a car of this size. There were also a selection of nice V6 petrol engines including a turbo charged 2.7l 30v turbo unit.

Most A6's sold came with a V6 engine and we suggest the 2.7 turbo and 4.2l NASP have the best potential for your tuning project.

When it comes to tuning the A6 engines you should note that the larger your base power the greater the return in power gain will be. With a turbo  you can add another 40-100% to the power gains given by a NASP engine.

One option for you could include an  engine swap to one of the more powerful A6 units. Car Tuning Tips would focus on improving the handling and braking of  your A6 as this can be dramatically improved with performance aftermarket parts.

The 1.8 and 2.0 will need some major work doing to it if you are after a good power gain. But generally speaking on the petrol engines the following mods would give a good return of power. First up fit larger valves, get the head ported and polished and have a 3 angle valve job done and this will raise power and efficiency. Increasing the compression of this engine will further maximise the power gains but you need to be careful on the turbo engines that you do not end up with detonation problems. Blueprinting and balancing your engine is expensive but will allow you to fully exploit the top end power of this engine and this will help to raise the reliable rev limit.

The Turbo engines are easy to tune up, and a simple remap is all you need to raise the power by 30-40%. Fitting a larger turbo, will really raise the potential as the standard turbo units can run out of puff quite early on in the rev range. A hybrid turbo is another option allowing you to choose a turbine profile based on your preferred boost characteristics.

Other modifications you should consider for your A6 engine. Fast road cams, air intake and sports exhaust & port matching.

For the power mad you always have the option of fitting a supercharger or turbo. Another option you may consider is adding nitrous injection kits, this alone can add 50bhp more power to your engine.

What other modifications?
Brake upgrades are popular and very necessary. The S6 provides a good upgrade path if you want to add better brakes but there are also some Porsche brake conversions around. There is also the option of getting a big brake conversion kit using bigger disks and larger pads with a 6 pot caliper and these are really worth the investment. We suggest you check the offset and clearance behind your alloys before purchasing a much larger brake kit to avoid disappointment.

Handling mods are also worth considering for your A6 we would recommend that you get a fully adjustable suspension kits so you can set this up to suit your driving style and preference. If you are lowering the car then stick with a drop of upto 35mm depending on the standard drop already (sports versions are already lowered around 20mm like the S6 and RS6).
