Audi A5 tuning performance tips

Fully Explore "Audi A5 Tuning"

The A5 was a radically designed coupe from Audi released in 2007 and has very pleasing lines. The last coupe made by Audi was back in the mid 1990's with the Audi 80.  The lack of a coupe left a big gap in Audi's line up and thankfully one that has now been filled.

We have yet to meet someone who dislikes the A5 Styling. There was no S5 or RS5 launched when the car first came out but this is really only a matter of time with the S5 cabriolet announced in 2009 and an RS5 model for 2010.

So onto our A5  tuning tips:-
All the engines offered on the A5 respond well to tuning, with our picks being the FSi Turbo engines and the 4.2 V8. Both the 2.7 and 3.0 TDi engines also respond well to remaps and outperform similar petrol cars from other makers.

The NASP V6 blocks (3.2, and 4.2) will need some major work doing to them if you are after a good power gain. A fast road cam is one of your best single power modification on the NASP engines. You will need to fit larger valves, get the head ported and polished and have a 3 angle valve job done. Increasing the compression of this engine will further maximise the power gains. Blueprinting and balancing the engine will allow you to fully exploit the top end power of this engine and this will help to raise the rev limit.

For the power mad you always have the option of fitting a supercharger or turbo. Another option you may consider is adding nitrous injection kits, this alone can add 50bhp more power to your engine.

The FSi turbo engines are ideal candidates for a remap and offer a power hike of around 30-40%. Fitting a front mounted intercooler and larger turbo or hybrid turbo are other options if you want to push up the power of these engines. Early FSi engines had a few issues but by the time the A5 range was launched we have seen most of these addressed.

Other modifications you should consider for your Golf engine. Fast road cams, air intake and sports exhaust & port matching.

If you have one of the TDI engines then we strongly recommend that you get a remap done. The only downside to a remap is the need to be fastidious about servicing.

What other modifications?
Brake upgrades are popular. We have seen some Audi owners using the larger brakes from performance RS models along with a few Porsche brake conversions. There are also a number of aftermarket parts around suitable for the A5 from fast road brake pads to full big brake conversion kits with vented and grooved disks. We suggest you check the offset and clearance behind your alloys before purchasing a much larger brake kit.

Handling mods are also worth considering for your A5, we would recommend that you get fully adjustable suspension kits (coilovers seem to be preferred by many A5 owners) but if they are adjustable you can set them up to suit your driving style. If you are lowering the car then stick with a drop of 20-35mm depending on the standard drop already. Geometry settings and bound and rebound rates are more important than ride height.
