The best B6244FS upgrades on an engine are typically the ones that give the biggest return for your money.

We won't be swayed by popular B6244FS upgrades, they need to be cost effective.

Improving air intake on the B6244FS

You need fuel and air for an engine to work. If there is little supply of fuel then it will run lean, if there is insufficient air it runs rich sapping power which risks damage to the B6244FS. We'll pick up on fuelling later in this article but for now we shall look at air supply.

So Shoving more air and fuel into each cylinder is the aim to any engine tuning project.

You'll commonly see there's a limit in the air flow sensor MAF/MAP on the B6244FS when considerably more air is being fed into the engine.

When tuning you may well find you need to get an air sensor or flow meter capable of upto 4 bars to cope with quite large power gains, whereas the OEM air sensor was restricting bhp and torque at a much lower level.

Intake headers transmit the on the suck phase from the air filter and allow it to be fed into the engine and mixed with fuel.

The shape and rate of flow of the Air Intake manifolds can make a large change to fuel atomisation on the B6244FS.

Many mass produced engine intake manifold are crying out for a performance upgrade, although some manufacturers provide decently flowing intake manifold.

Adding a B6244FS larger valve kit, doing a bit of 3 or 5 angle valve jobs and porting and head flowing will also improve power, & more importantly will permit a better power increase on other upgrades.

B6244FS performance cam tips.

Different B6244FS engines respond better to more or less aggressive camshaft durations so set your engine up on a rolling road.

The map and fuel pump and injectors also will make differences on the bhp gains you'll get.

Extending exhaust or intake durations can alter the bhp band and on most engines the exhaust and intake durations do not need to match, although most cams and tuners use matched pairs there are some advantages to extending the intake or exhaust durations.

Significant air intake, and exhaust improvements on the B6244FS can be made from camshaft upgrades. Changing the camshaft profile alters the intake and exhaust durations on the engine and can dramatically change the engines power and power output.

NB: Fast road cams usually raise the bhp and torque over the rev band, you could drop a little bottom end bhp but the higher rpm power will be higher.

Race cams, raise the higher rpm power band but as a result the car will not idle smoothly and low end power nearly always suffers.

A Motorsport and race camshaft makes it harder when driving around busy urban areas.

You should ideally match your power band to your preferences so for a road car stick with a fast road B6244FS camshaft

Stage 1, 2 and 3 mods for the B6244FS

Before we break the best tuning upgrades down into stages of tune, let's list the most effective tuning upgrades for you.

  1. Suspension Upgrades - always improve your cars handling
  2. Brake Upgrades - Even before adding power improve those brakes
  3. Intake - make sure the intake is not restricted, use filters and intake upgrades to improve this
  4. Exhaust - as with 3 ensure there is not restriction in the exhaust, cats are the usual bottleneck
  5. Tunes - remapping, piggyback ECU's and aftermarket ECU's can all make decent gains
  6. Fuelling - when you've increased power you'll need to match this with more fuel
  7. Turbo upgrades - Improving the intake with a large turbo and better flowing intercooler will be the biggest power gain you'll see (but one of the most complex).

This video guide to tuning cars is a great starting point to work from in your project.

Stage 1 B6244FS parts:

Intake headers, Drilled & smoothed airbox, Remaps/piggy back ECU, Sports exhaust manifold, Fast road camshaft, Panel air filters.

Stage 2 B6244FS parts:

Fast road cam, Ported and polished head, Sports catalyst & performance exhaust, fuel pump upgrades, high flow fuel injectors, induction kit.

Stage 3 B6244FS parts:

Internal engine upgrades (head flowing porting/bigger valves), Crank and Piston upgrades to alter compression, Twin charging conversions, Adding or Upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Engine balancing & blueprinting, Competition cam.

Plan your options and then buy your upgrades and set yourself a power target to avoid expensive mistakes.

Mapping will help to establish the full potential of all the tuning mods you've done to your B6244FS.

You will typically expect to see gains of approximately 20-30% more power on turbocharged vehicles and you can expect to see around 15% on NASP engines, but the end result will vary depending on the tuning mods you've fitted and the condition of your engine.

Turbo modifications on the B6244FS

To get a turbo working on a NASP engine there is a lot involved, from lowering compression ratio to improved fuel supply and mapping, so we have found a great guide to helpavoid the common pitfalls or end up with an unfinished project because you were not told what you were getting into by doing this on the B6244FS.

The more air you can get into an engine, the more fuel it can burn and uprating the induction with a turbocharger upgrade makes significant power gains.

When the engine is fitted with a turbocharger upgrades are going to net you a larger power gain and you will discover turbo charged engines use more solid components.

There are common areas of failure for every engine, with some being extremely strong and some just sufficiently able to handle stock power

It is important to find these limits and fit better pistons and crank to cope with the power.

There are many mechanics spending a lots of money on turbocharger upgrades on the B6244FS only to watch the engine block literally blow up soon after it's been completed.

Bigger capacity turbo chargers tend to suffer no power at low rpm, and small turbo chargers spool up really quickly but won't have the high rpm torque gains.

In recent times the choice of turbos is always evolving and we commonly find variable vane turbos, where the vane angle is altered according to speed to lower lag and increase top end power.

Twin scroll turbos divert the exhaust gases into a couple of channels and flow these at differently profiled vanes in the turbocharger. They also boost the scavenging effect of the engine.

Beefing up the air intake by adding a supercharger or additional turbo will help you achieve very large performance gains, although more complex to get working. We have this article covering twinchargers if you want to read more.

Tips about fuel supply on the B6244FS

When you boost the bhp you will need to uprate to the fuel delivery.

More bhp needs more fuel. Care modifiers usually say to be generous with your injectors flow rate.

As a rule of thumb add 15% when buying an injector, helps cope with injector deterioration and gives a little spare capacity should the engine need more fuel.

Don't forget that different fuel grades will usually require different settings, a high octane fuel will burn more efficiently than lower octane fuel for example. A car will trim fuel supply to keep within the ideal air fuel mix but at the extreme ends you may need to adjust your injector capacity, or the mapping or you'll get flat spots and potential lean or rich fuel issues..

Recommended B6244FS performance exhaust upgrades

Only look to uprate your exhaust system with an upgraded one is if your current exhaust is actually creating a restriction.

On most factory exhausts you'll see the exhaust flow rate is good even on modest power gains, but on a serious tuning project with a big boost in power you will certainly need to get a better flowing exhaust.

Sports exhausts can usually air flow from the engine but avoid an exhaust that is too wide or you may end up will reduce the flow rate. Stick to one and a half to two and half inches as a rule of thumb.

Usual exhaust restrictions can be located the catalysts installed, so adding a better flowing performance alternative will help avoid this restriction.

Decatting (NB:catalysts reduce harmful engine emissions) is illegal in most countries and regions.

Faults issues and things to look out for on the B6244FS

Like most engines an B6244FS, should have few issues if it gets properly serviced and looked after.

We cannot stress enough the need for oil changes with the correct grade of oil on the B6244FS, failure to do this will exacerbate engine wear, on a tuned B6244FS this is more important than ever and close attention should be paid to your maintenance schedule.
